People living in rental accommodation have been advised that they should take out home contents insurance.
The head of Direct Line home insurance, Andrew Lowe, explained that home contents insurance will cover tenants' personal belongings.
In addition, he claimed that "contents insurance is often a lot cheaper than you expect".
Tenants should also speak to their landlords about ensuring they have the "best practical security measures" in place, Mr Lowe added.
He explained: "Most landlords see security measures as a wise investment in their property which can actually reduce the insurance premiums they pay."
Mr Lowe's comments come after financial comparison site moneysupermarket.com recently found that 40 per cent of UK property owners do not have home insurance.
While burglaries across England and Wales are falling on average, according to Home Office figures, there are some parts of the country where homeowners run a bigger risk.
Research by Endsleigh found that houses in Nottingham, London and Bristol are more likely to be burgled than in other parts of the country.
InsureandGo offers home insurance to help offer protection against financial losses incurred through being burgled.
