Britain's homes 'a treasure trove'

Homes throughout Britain contain more than £52 billion worth of jewellery, according to financial services provider Halifax.

In a newly-released study, the company identifies regional trends that show the country's penchant for expensive pendants, watches and other items - with £8.6 billion worth of jewellery said to be adorned by UK consumers on a daily basis.

Residents in Northampton are said to be the most keen on expensive jewellery, with the average denizen of the area said to wear £469 worth of jewels.

On a national basis, it is revealed that five million Britons own jewellery worth more than £5,000 in total, although 35 per cent of people are found never to have had their items valued.

Martyn Foulds, senior claims manager at Halifax Home Insurance, said: "We would advise anyone wearing particularly valuable items outside the home on a daily basis to make sure that they are fully insured for loss, damage or theft when outside their property."

A report published earlier this year by the group suggested that 7.8 million homes throughout Britain contain musical instruments worth over £523 on average.
