In addition to a police crackdown on mobile phone use while driving, many car insurance providers are starting to increase premiums or refuse cover for those caught committing the offence.
Such is the suggestion of the AA, which states that insurers are increasing premiums by as much as 18.1 per cent to protect themselves against the increased risk.
As well as incurring a £60 fixed charge, UK drivers caught on the phone while behind the wheel could also find themselves forking out an additional £40 per year.
It is estimated that the total cost for additional premiums could be as high as £5.4 million each year.
Simon Douglas, director of AA Insurance commented: "Driving whilst using a hand-held mobile phone places you at greater risk of having an accident - it slows reactions and you are less able to control the car."
Last month, the AA published figures suggesting that overall, average insurance premiums were down for the first quarter of 2008.
InsureandGo offers car insurance policies that search the market to find the cheapest deal to suit requirements.
