Beware of 'backyard robbers'

With the May bank holiday weekend approaching, homeowners have been urged to make sure that their gardens are protected from opportunistic thieves.

Cheshire Building Society is advising consumers to make sure that they have adequate home insurance protection before they go away for the three day weekend.

It also suggests taking a number of precautions before travelling to reduce the likelihood of backyard burglary.

Ensuring that all garden tools and other expensive items are locked securely in a shed or within the house is identified as a key preventative measure.

Garden access points should also be made secure, the group suggests.

Karen Torson, partnerships business manager at Cheshire Building Society, said: "During the summer months there tends to be an increase in the number of garden thefts as people get their gardens into shape."

She added that thieves will take anything from patio furniture to electrical equipment such as lawnmowers or pressure washers.

Elsewhere, Yesinsurance has recently advised car-owners that thieves are increasingly looking to target new cars in order to steal catalytic converters, which contain platinum and other expensive metals that are currently trading at inflated prices.
