The Youth Hostel Association (YHA) has said that many people's perceptions of hostel services are years out of date.
Paul Fearn, communications manager for YHA, said that because older people may have been to a hostel when they were young, they still view hostels as they were ten or twenty years ago.
Common misconceptions noted by Mr Fearn were the belief that they only offered dormitory rooms.
He explained that single rooms are available, while membership requirements have also been scrapped, meaning that anyone can stay at a youth hostel.
Mr Fearn explained: "Hostels have improved dramatically. We are looking more towards en suites and private rooms because that's what people expect now."
He concluded by saying that hostels offered a cost-effective but stylish place to stay.
The YHA website explains that hostels offer a great way to meet people while they are on their travels.
