Pet insurance provider esure has suggested that taking out cover for an animal is more important than providing it with expensive treats.
It urged pet-owners to put their animal's welfare before other considerations such as buying new gadgets, toys or jewellery for their pets.
Asia Manzoor, spokesperson for esure pet insurance, said: "Vets' fees can be very expensive and owners should bear in mind that, ultimately, their pet's health is more important than the latest dog accessories or expensive treats."
He added that although many consumers treat their animals as part of the family and spent considerable amounts on ensuring a good quality of life, many people still fail to take out suitable protection.
Research from Sainsbury's Finance has suggested that over 5.5 million people believe that they do not need pet cover for their cat or dog, with 897,000 respondents suggesting that they did not need it because their animal was in good health.
InsureandGo offers pet insurance cover to provide security and peace of mind for animal-owners.
