People 'improving over moving'

As the credit crunch bites and house prices tumble, many consumers are choosing to make improvements to their home rather than putting it on the market.

Such is the claim of Michael Holmes, editor-in-chief of Homebuilding and Renovating magazine, speaking recently at the Homebuilding and Renovation Show.

He explained that splitting a bedroom or adding a loft conversion are popular and effective ways of improving the value of property.

"At the moment life goes on no matter what the housing market's doing... If people can't sell or move, they will consider the option of improving instead," he said.

The development expert went on to claim that new regulations coming into effect in England and Wales will allow more people to make significant alterations to their property without the need for full consent.

Meanwhile, Imran Khan, an independent mortgage adviser who was also at the show, explained that many people have an aversion to enter the market at the moment because of falling prices and high mortgage rates.
