Ferries offer passengers a greener, more cost-effective and more convenient travel option when compared to flying.
Such is the suggestion of the Association of Independent Tour Operators (AITO), which has indicated that travelling by sea is becoming an increasingly popular option.
Derek Moore, chairman of the organisation, has said that more people are choosing ferry journeys because of a growing awareness of the environmental impact of plane journeys.
Furthermore, he added: "Taking a ferry is a convenient and cost-effective way to get to the continent."
He insisted that holidays to Europe are still proving popular despite recent strong performances by the euro.
Mr Moore also pointed out that for many travellers, ferry journeys are seen as part of the vacation, with children viewing the trip as an adventure.
According to statistics from the Passenger Shipping Association, more than 40 million UK tourists make ferry journeys every year, with 1.5 million holidaymakers embarking on a cruise.
InsureandGo offers travel insurance options to protect possessions on journeys made by all major modes of transport.
