As students break up for the summer, financial adviser Moneyfacts has urged them to make sure that insurance is factored into planning for the year ahead.
The group advised that specialist cover is available to protect possessions in shared accommodation and halls.
Furthermore, students were advised to consider whether additional cover such as bicicyle or motorcycle insurance would be necessary.
For those concerned about their ability to live on a limited budget, Moneyfacts urged them not to bury their head in the sand.
"If you let things get out of control, you must remember that financial mistakes at university are not wiped clean and they can come back to haunt you later in life," it warned.
In an effort to reduce the likelihood of this happening, students were advised to set out a realistic budget to make sure expenditure is under control.
Earlier this month, Moneyfacts also advised those who have just finished university to set out a realistic debt repayment plan to make contributions as soon as is affordable.
InsureandGo offers motorcycle insurance for all bike owners.
