Those heading off to Mexico have been advised to head away from the mainland to catch a glimpse of the country's untouched beaches.
Guardian commentator Paul Torpey said that the Isla Mujeres, off the east coast, offers a relaxed alternative to the "spring-break hijinks" that have ballooned in popularity in Cancun.
"Although most visitors are happy kicking back on the milky sand with a glass of something cool, there are opportunities for shaking down the towel and appreciating some of the surrounding marine beauty," Mr Torpey insisted.
He explained that local fishermen offer snorkelling, deep-sea diving and birdwatching excursions to the Parque Nacional Isla Contoy.
Mr Torpey insisted that visiting the island for the first time was like arriving in Jurassic Park, as Contoy's only permanent inhabitants lizards, crabs and seabirds.
The island's website explains that Contoy has been protected by the Mexican government since 1961 and was declared a national park in 1998.
